Castel Sant'Angelo was built as the tomb, the mausoleum, of the emperor Adrian. In the 13th century, a fortified corridor between the castle and St. Peter’s Basilica was built, and the castle became a papal residence. Today, it’s home to the Castel Sant'Angelo National Museum and its collection of art, archaeological finds, and weaponry.
We‘ll start with the legendary bridge built by the emperor Adrian and restored in the 17th century, to continue with the story of the mausoleum, commissioned by the emperor, that housed the ashes of Adrian and his successors up to the terrible emperor Caracalla.
The castle has been Inglobated in the 3rd century inside the Aurelian walls, so it became a fortress, and later the safe residence of the popes. you’ll learn the dark legend of the Borgia's pope that used the castle to protect himself from the multitude of enemies. We’ll continue admiring the fully decorated rooms commissioned by the pope Farnese, enriched by precious frescoes, expression of his richness and power.
